Choosing an Outdoor Water Fountain That Goes With the Style of Your Home
There are so many options available when shopping for an outdoor water fountain. How do you choose one that will complement the look of your home and garden? It’s simpler than it looks.
Scale
The appropriate outdoor water fountain should be appropriately sized to complement your home. One easy guideline is to consider the size of your foyer or entryway. A fountain that can fit in that space without rendering it uncomfortable or unusable is probably an acceptable size. It’s safer to err on the side of smaller; even grand manor houses in the Japanese tradition use the unassuming shishi-odoshi deer chaser fountain, which is usually no more than knee height. An overly large outdoor water fountain runs the risk of resembling a monument.
Style
Look at the architectural style of your home. While you won’t necessarily find a fountain that matches it exactly, nor should you, the architecture can give you some hints about the style of fountain that will fit your landscape. A traditional Victorian home decorated with turned pillars, ornate brass door fittings, and carved gingerbread decoration will look harmonious with a large fountain rich in surface detail, while a more subdued contemporary American home might call for a simple pillar fountain or a realistic-looking waterfall fountain. If your home is in the modern geometric style, with a substantial paved patio, an abstract bronze or glass fountain may look beautiful with it.
Color
An outdoor water fountain can be found in a staggering variety of materials and colors. Classical style fountains are often carved out of stone, or cast in synthetic stone-look materials for significantly less expense. These come in wide arrays of natural colors, from white, cream, grey, and gold to dramatic reds and blacks. These are well-suited to most home color schemes.
Concrete fountains are also available. Most are in white, but concrete can be dyed many different colors, so check with your fountain manufacturer for other options. Metal fountains are made in steel, copper, bronze, and brass, each with its own surface qualities and a variety of bright or weathered finishes. Bright metals are very attractive in open landscapes with pale-colored buildings. Weathered metal gives a feeling of age to an environment and looks beautiful alongside unfinished wood, brick, or stone buildings.
Bamboo is becoming newly popular in fountain design, and looks wonderful in any natural setting.
